Lamps4U is one of the most well-known companies for providing efficient and sustainable lighting solutions in the UAE and GCC. The brand was founded as a safe disposal program for hazardous light bulbs, but has now become a provider of long-life LED lamps, chic designs and cradle to cradle recycling solutions. Let’s see how Lamps4U took its humble beginnings and transformed into a model that is cited all over the world for good lighting responsibility in 2026.
What Is Lamps4U? Dubai initiative to Global Lighting brand is an example of this.

Lamps4U began as a Dubai initiative to safely dispose of compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). CFLs also store small amounts of mercury which may become airborne if the lamps are broken or dumped in the trash and can affect the food chain.
Lamps4U CEO Mahesh Patel has seen the need for such a project in the UAE, where there are no established facilities for the safe disposal of CFLs. Whilst establishing a lighting business as a representative for Eurolux from South Africa, he wanted to “give a cradle to cradle solution”.
In today’s context, Lamps4U is cited as a company that tries to combine the concepts of energy efficiency with a wider sense of ecology. It’s famous for its certification and for the durability of its LED lamps, as well as its structured recycling.
Why Safe Lamp Disposal Matters 2. The Mercury Problem
The Uae’s Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma) has decided to ban incandescent bulbs from July 2014. The new replacement technologies (halogen bulbs, LEDs and CFLs) introduced new challenges.
The CFL Hazard
Although CFLs are safe to use, Mahesh Patel says, “Once a light has been broken, it has mercury in the environment, and if the lights are not disposed of properly, for example, thrown in the trash with the rest of the trash, then it can contaminate the trash.”
Mercury can then be deposited in landfills and contaminate drinking water, or along with water runoff, enter the sea. It is eaten by fish and when eaten by humans, “we’re getting mercury in our bodies, and these levels can become toxic.”
To prevent this, Lamps4U has developed a Zero Landfill recycling programme, under which all lamp parts are recycled.
How the Lamps4U Recycling Programme Works
Lamps4U developed an end-to-end solution for the management of spent lamps and divert them from landfill.
The EasyPak Process
- Sign Up: Organisations sign up and choose EasyPak containers to collect spent lamps.
- Safe Storage: These are UN tested and approved storage and transportation receptacles for toxic waste storage.
- Collection: Lamps4U staff collects the containers when full.
- Processing: Lamps are delivered to appropriate processing facilities with the use of specialised equipment which separates the lamp into its recyclable materials.
The recycling process helps to reuse the plastic, metal, glass and mercury. Companies receive a certificate to display the companies green attributes, certifying HSE and CSR compliance requirements.
“This is proven technology, everything is available in Dubai today,” said Patel. The ultimate goal is that all of the CFL’s are collected so there will be no mercury released into the environment.
The fourth aspect is Strategic Partnerships, between Dulsco and Dubai Municipality.
Lamps4U scaled successfully through key partnerships throughout the UAE and GCC.
Dulsco Collaboration
Lamps4U is a human resources & waste management leader that joined Dulsco for recycling CFL’s. Collection, transport of used and unbroken lamps and environmentally safe storage containers are provided by Dulsco.
“We are working towards such recycling programmes and services to encourage people to be environmentally friendly,” said S. Madhumohan, director waste management, Dulsco.
Government Support
Otherwise, Dubai Municipality has been very supportive of the scheme. Lamps4U FZCO is a licensed lamp disposal company by Dubai municipality. It was created in partnership with public institutions in the UAE, and has since been very popular since its launch in 2015.
Patel said that the scheme will be rolled out to the entire GCC region, adding that they had already “soft launched” the project and will open it to the public over the next few months with the support of the relevant government bodies.
500% of the 2014 sales were to the 500,000 customers of Lamps4U.

Lamps4U has evolved from a recycling company to a place for fashionable and functional lighting. The brand has a wide range of products that are used in the home and for business.

The programme enables businesses to think about the bigger picture when making the switch to sustainable energy by using lamps that are required to be energy efficient.
